The Macedon Ranges, located about an hour northwest of Melbourne, is rich in cultural heritage, featuring historic gardens, wineries, and artisan communities. At its core lies the Mount Macedon trail, which guides you through the range’s lush forests, tranquil picnic areas, and stunning viewpoints. Starting near the Mount Macedon Hotel, the trail ascends steadily, offering panoramic views and showcasing the region’s vibrant beauty. Highlights include serene landmarks such as Camels Hump and Sanatorium Lake, with the journey culminating at the iconic Memorial Cross.

This hike is ideal for intermediate-level hikers seeking a duration challenge, with a demanding section at the start and an additional test at Camels Hump.
What to Bring:
Pack a comfortable day backpack with 2L of water, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat for sun protection. Wear sturdy trainers with good grip or, ideally, waterproof hiking boots and bring a waterproof jacket for unexpected rain or wind. Also consider using hiking poles to support your knees on descents and maintain balance, and gaiters for extra protection against snakes and rain (though they are optional).
